so, i have finished grading the exam in, what a student accidentally called in a private email to me, hystery of english. it is rather a hilarious subject, as everyone might guess, full of surprises for sure.
today i was looking through the result analysis, and stumbled upon the simple question “who compiled the Oxford English Dictionary?” the answers included Samuel Johnson (correct, 88% of 227 attempts), Ben Johnson (long dead, or American, 4%), John Samuels (just for fun, 1%) and Joseph Smith. surprisingly many (7%) had clicked the answer ‘Joseph Smith’. who, if history be believed, compiled the book of mormon.
i wonder, what it might mean. probably just one of those things that happen in a multiple choice exam.
hilarious, as i said above.
