the tree of life

Image result for cat carries sparrow

What if the real punishment
for eating off that tree
was not the death, but that we
would not die so easily?
That we would know of life,
and breath and sunshine,
rain, and love and joy, and
the endless longing
for that undiscover’d country,
and we would possess our pain,
hold it dearer than gladness,
and still, refuse to make the journey.
No traveller returns, so
we must not go, these places
though wearing, are home.
What if the hours of life
extended by this fear
are our imprisonment, imposed
on us by us, and so
we go on living under a curse?
What stops the moment, who
sings our song through time?
What do you see when watching
the cat bring in a sparrow?
